Hiroko Kusano

Museum Operations
Managing Partner
Los Angeles
Hiroko Kusano has more than 20 years in museum and non-profit management. Her diverse experience encompasses operations, curation, fundraising, membership, technology systems, events management, retail operations, marketing and social media, nonprofit and for-profit start-up strategy. She is particularly interested in helping organizations grow their internal capacity by developing and documenting internal policies and procedures, creating efficiencies in workflows, enabling interdepartmental communication, and building and implementing systems for training staff.

Most recently, Hiroko was Senior Development Manager at Japan House Los Angeles, which fosters worldwide awareness and appreciation for Japan by showcasing the very best of Japanese art, design, gastronomy, innovation, and technology in its galleries and programs. Reporting to the President, she was hired to create and lead a new development department and to start a new non-profit organization to oversee external fundraising, including corporate solicitations, research, engaging corporations and individuals for various events, and reporting to government and foundations. Her role was quickly expanded to include project management assignments across the organization, which valued her museum experience and innovative thinking. Her new scope included leadership and troubleshooting for a range of projects, including developing new approaches to gallery operations, assisting with strategic initiatives, and program ideation.

Since 2011, she has been co-owner of MuseWeb, an annual conference that reviews and analyzes the issues of new technology and their impact on cultural, natural, and scientific heritage for more than 800 attendees from more than 40 countries each year and an online community of more than 80,000. Hiroko manages the conference, expo hall, social events, scholarship program, AV, fundraising, and sponsorship, as well as volunteers for the event. In addition to the week-long conference in a new North American city each year, she has produced numerous special events, including dozens of events and conferences and publications in Hong Kong, Beijing, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Shanghai in China; Daejeon and Seoul in Korea; and Melbourne, Australia.
